Cotton Candy Cloud Cake

Last week I got a request to make a special cake for a friend’s birthday.  I was stumped because I didn’t have a lot of time to prep decorations, prepare fillings or make anything elaborate.  I needed a design that I could bake up that night, chill overnight, then decorate in less than 30 minutes the next day.  This cotton candy cloud cake was just what the doctor ordered.

Luckily I had some cotton candy that I purchased a few weeks ago thinking it would make cute clouds.  So my first thought was to cover the cake with “clouds” but I figured out pretty quick that the moisture in the frosting would melt the cotton candy.  So I decided to suspend the clouds on skewers and top them off with little banners.  I’m super happy with how it turned out!

This is a quick way to get a dramatic look for a special cake.  To get this look, decorate your cake with whatever technique works best for you.  Then prepare your skewers by gluing the banners on.  Next, push a “cloud” of cotton candy onto the bottom, holding it in place with a gum drop or other sticky candy on the bottom.  If you skip this step, your clouds will just slide down the skewer.  Not fun.  I recommend making and putting on your clouds right before serving.  This won’t keep well in the fridge or sitting out for hours.  The cotton candy will deflate, droop or get gummy.  I found this white cotton candy at Party City.  It was labeled “mystery flavor” but I think it was watermelon.  Yikes.

The birthday girl loved it.  It looks like a perfect blue sky day!
